John in Kurdistan 2013

John in Kurdistan Summer 2013

A picture, taken by a colleague from 35000ft, of the Atrush 3 wellsite at center right

Looking east and north down the valley

The rig DQE (DaQing Energy) #031 on location.

At the end of April, both flowers and butterflies are in full bloom

Storks are common along the road from Erbil to the rig.

John at a rest stop having a tea,
served in a small glass handeless cup- very strong, very hot and very sweet.

The mid-sized town of Qsrok, one of many towns in Kurdistan that suffered in the 'Anfal.

Moths are attracted to the rig lights at night, and it takes
them a while to get going again in the morning.

A road / goat track / trail behind the rig.
Getting a tea at a truck stop, north west of Erbil
A large and new mosque on the outskirts of Kalak, west of Erbil.
Getting closer to the rig, scanning for explosives.
To beat the summer heat, the folks in Bakurman have
set up two rows of breezy compartments next to the river.
A screen shot of an airliner tracking website.
Note all of the airliners in a row, flying over the rig,
on their way from Europe / N.America to the cities of the Gulf,
all avoiding Syrian airspace.
A white, unmarked 747 carrying pilgrims to Mecca for the Haj.

A bright red poppy.
Many of the vehicles in Kurdistan, especially the large trucks are brought in from Europe.
This one used to belong to my 4th cousin, Franz Pabst. :-)
